For those of you out in Internet Land who can’t afford to buy DVDs right now, or who don’t have current rentals available to you, YouTube reports that they’ve struck a deal with the Walt Disney Company to offer rentals of their movies, with new releases like Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides costing $3.99 for 48 hours. They have all four of the Pirates film available.

The Blu-ray release of On Stranger Tides has warranted some celebrating. When Industrial Light and Magic had a day-long press event, and CraveOnline was there talking to the people who made the magic come alive. Visual-effects supervisor Ben Snow was on hand to talk about mermaids, creatures Disney has had a long history with. But the ones in OST aren’t the lovesick, show tune-singing, using-forks-for-combs kind of girls:

“In the mythology of the sea, mermaids were historically beautiful, but deadly creatures,” Snow said. “They lured sailors to their deaths. That’s a very appealing and sexy tradition, narratively. We were excited to bring them back to that tradition.”

Female First has an exclusive interview with On Stranger Tides star Astrid Berges Frisbey, who played the mermaid Syrena. Among many other topics discussed, was the relationships between Syrena and Philip, the virtuous missionary played by Sam Claflin:

“But I think that this is an interesting point in the story as they learn to trust each other and I think because of Philip she appears a bit more human – and at some point she is even more human than the real humans in the movie.”
